1U Colocation vs 2U Colocation

The Difference Between 1U Colocation and 2U Colocation Plans

Today, I want to discuss the difference between our two bundled hosting plans: 1U Colocation and 2U Colocation.  This is part of our shared colocation offering.  While these two plans appear to be just a small difference in space and power, there are actually significant differences between the two, and these colo bundles were mostly designed with specific types of usage in mind.

Metanet also offers colocation on a per-rack unit and per-Amp basis incrementally where the customer can simply pay a flat amount based on the amount of space and committed rate power alone that they utilize. All other services are added, as needed.

For the purpose of this discussion, I will only be discussing our bundled plans.   Our 1U and 2U shared colocation bundled packages includes everything you might need for your deployment: rack space, power, bandwidth, IP Address space, remote hands, free rack and stack, in one flat rate.  I discuss our bundled packages below:

1U Colocation Bundle

Our goal was to create the 1U Colocation plan for customers who just have a basic server or telecom infrastructure to collocate inside the data center. Usually, 1U servers from manufacturers like HP, Dell, and Supermicro are equipped with a few SSD or M.2 drives and a limited amount of RAM, which means they don’t require significant power. These types of chassis typically consume less power than the 2U systems because they house fewer components.

The average 1U user simply wants to house their bare-metal dedicated server in a climate-controlled environment with some basic support, good clean bandwidth, and IPs free of abuse complaints often found in so many other data centers today. While there are other power users, this type of user is typical of 1U Colocation customers, so we give them an entire block of 8 IPs and a decent amount of bandwidth to go with it.  In our bundles such as this one, where space, electric, bandwidth are included together for a flat price, we strive to keep our costs as low as possible to create an affordable entry point for these customers. Often, in the future, they may decide to scale, and at that point, we can provide a much more robust data center solution for them.

2U Colocation Bundle

Opposed to this is the 2U Colocation type of customer. These customers typically have a 2U server, which is able to hold more CPUs and more hard drives. Whereas a 1U server may only be able to store 8-10 hard drives, some 2U servers can store up to 24 drives. They may have space for larger heatsinks and may contain more processors. Usually, the 1U servers on the low end are single-CPU models, though some do have two CPUs. However, it is uncommon to find a 2U server with only one CPU. The power supplies are usually larger for the 2U systems due to the increased electrical demand from more powerful hardware

Typically, these types of customers are often running virtualized environments using platforms like VMware, KVM Linux, or Hyper-V, hosting multiple virtual machines on their server. As a result, they almost always need a decent allocation of IP addresses.

To support their needs we provide a /28 IP block for those customers, which comes to 13 usable IP addresses. We also provide more bandwidth, to accommodate the higher traffic demands associated with running numerous VPS instances.
